Your moving checklist
Use this simple timeline for a home or apartment move anywhere in New Jersey.
8 weeks before
- Set your moving date and budget.
- Start decluttering room by room. Donate, sell or recycle what you will not take.

6 weeks before
- Book movers or a truck if you need them.

4 weeks before
- Start packing items you use least: off-season clothes, decorations, books.
- Photograph and list what goes in each bin so you can search for it later.
- Arrange parking, elevator or loading dock access for moving day.
2 weeks before
- Pack most of the house, room by room.
- Transfer utilities and update your address with the post office, bank and employer.
- Confirm your delivery and collection dates.
The last week
- Pack an essentials bin: medication, chargers, toiletries, important papers.
- Defrost the freezer and clean as you go.
- Label every bin so it lands in the right room.
Moving day
- Keep valuables and documents with you.
- Do a final walk-through of every room, closet and cupboard.
- Book a free bin collection once you have unpacked.
After the move
