How Many Moving Boxes Do I Need? A Simple Guide by Home Size
A simple guide to how many cardboard moving boxes you need for a studio, 1, 2 or 3 bedroom home, and how to mix boxes with reusable bins.
Typical numbers of moving boxes
These are rough starting points if you pack mostly with cardboard boxes. If you also rent bins, you will need fewer boxes.
- Studio: about 15 to 25 boxes
- 1 bedroom: about 25 to 40 boxes
- 2 bedroom: about 40 to 60 boxes
- 3 bedroom: about 60 to 90 boxes
Round up. It is easier to have a few spare boxes than to stop packing to find more.
Mix boxes and bins
Bins and boxes each have their place:
- Bins (rented by the week): books, tools, kitchenware, clothes, anything heavy. They stack, close with lids and carry well. See how many bins you need.
- Cardboard boxes: light and odd-shaped items, things you want to keep packed for a long time, and anything you would rather not carry in a bin.
Which size for what
- Small boxes: books, tools, heavy items.
- Medium boxes: most kitchenware, toys, shoes.
- Large boxes: bedding, towels and other light, bulky items.
