How to Pack for Long-Term Storage: A Practical Guide for New Jersey
Packing things for permanent or long-term storage? What to pack in boxes and bins, how to label, and how to get boxes, tape and paper delivered to your front steps.
Pack once, find things later
Things you put into long-term storage are things you will not touch for months or years. Pack them so they stay clean and dry, and so you can find them when you need them.
What goes where
- Cardboard boxes: books, papers (not originals you cannot replace), linens, decor, anything light.
- Plastic bins with lids: anything that could be hurt by damp or pests, and heavier items. Bins stack well and stay closed.
Before you pack
- Sort first. Keep, donate, sell, recycle.
- Clean and dry everything. Damp items and dirt cause trouble in storage.
- Do not store anything perishable, hazardous, valuable or irreplaceable such as cash, jewelry or original documents.
Packing tips
- Fill boxes completely so they do not collapse when stacked.
- Put heavy boxes at the bottom of a stack and light ones on top.
- Label each box and list what is inside. Our bins have QR labels that make this searchable.
- Keep boxes off the floor, on a pallet or shelf.
Boxes delivered to your front steps
If you are putting things into permanent storage and need boxes, tape and packing paper, we deliver them to your front steps. See the boxes page. The boxes are yours to keep, and when you are done we will gladly pick them up and recycle 100% of them.
Frequently asked questions
Should I use boxes or bins for storage?
Bins protect better against damp and pests. Boxes are good for light items and are cheaper to keep packed for a long time. Many people use both.
How should I label storage boxes?
Write the room and a short list of contents on two sides, and keep a master list. See declutter and downsize.
